Origin and Aims of The Trade Association

The Association of Canal Enterprises was founded in 1982 as a
result of a meeting called by the late Sir John Knill at Bathampton
in the narrow, twisting, steep-sided valley which the canal shares
with the River Avon. Six newly formed businesses joined together to
solve the problems of providing services and facilities on a
commercial basis while seeking to preserve the unique features which
make the Kennet & Avon so special.

Since that time business activity along the
canal and the rivers has increased dramatically. Our new title, The
Kennet & Avon Trade Association, more accurately describes the
function of the organisation and the range of services provided by
our members.

British Waterways coined the phrase "Yours to Enjoy". The
Association of Canal Enterprises heartily endorses the concept that
the canal is available equally for the enjoyment of the rambler,
wild-life enthusiast, holiday visitor, canoeist, fisherman and
boater and our members are working to provide the facilities that
will be required to serve this wide range of interests.
